- Profile
Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County (LVORC) is a nonprofit social services organization dedicated to helping individuals in the Capital Region improve their literacy and communication skills. Through confidential, one-on-one and small-group tutoring sessions, LVORC empowers adults and families to achieve personal, educational, and employment goals. Their services are free of charge, making them accessible to people from diverse economic and cultural backgrounds. The organization places a strong emphasis on English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction, preparing non-native speakers to navigate everyday life, work, and community involvement.
In addition to traditional literacy tutoring, LVORC offers workplace literacy programs designed to help adults improve reading, writing, and digital skills for career advancement. LVORC is deeply rooted in the community, providing family literacy outreach and collaborating closely with schools, libraries, and other community organizations. Their volunteer-based model fosters strong civic engagement, allowing trained community members to make a direct, lasting impact in the lives of learners. Culturally inclusive and outcome-driven, LVORC contributes meaningfully to breaking the cycle of intergenerational illiteracy.
